Flea Market Finds - history

So this weeks find, is once again thanks to my fantastic Nanna.

Because once again, she has held onto something FOREVER.  Hoarding comes in handy sometimes...

And I am again at the receiving end of her 'cleaning out' efforts.

This suitcase belonged to my Great Great Grandfather.  He used to be a Train Driver, and this was the suitcase he would take on the train with him to work.... because he used to drive the train from Brisbane to Sydney you see.. so he needed to take a few days worth of clothes and supplies with him.

This suitcase is about 150 or so years old.  I definitely will be taking good care of it, and have a safe spot for it to live.

Isn't it delightful?

Pop over to Sophie's to join in.

Such a rare suitcase and beautifully preserved considering it's age and that it was used so much! I know it will be great to have to remind you of him too.

That suitcase is beautiful! I have been thinking this week how it would have been good if as a child I knew how good old stuff was. I thought it was all junk and now I scour garage sales and op shops trying to get the exact same stuff that my nana used to have under her house.

I was also thinking to myself about 30 mins ago that maybe if I hold onto some of my possessions for another 50 years, my grandchildren might find value in them....? But between now and 50 years I would merely see it as something that isn't fashionable anymore. Can't win! Oh well :-)

What a wonderful treasure. Rich with family history and age. Oh the stories that suitcase to tell, I'm sure. Of nights when he longed to be home with your grandmother as he grabbed his next change of clothes. I love treasures with wonderful stories attached to them. Thanks for sharing.
